The really good news this week is that the Sugar Levy has begun! On Monday 5th December it was agreed that next April there will be a tax imposed on high sugar drinks. Advertising on kids unhealthy food was curbed too. For all the info have a look at this:
But as always the key is making sure you're on top of it, as the food industry is always trying to throw sugar at us.
If you missed it on the news the other day, I thought it was my job to show you what Action On Sugar found out when they had a look at a load of high street cakes and muffins to see how high the levels of sugar were.
And guess what?? The results were insane.
At the top of the table, by a mile, was The Pret A Manger Lemon Drizzle Cake had a staggering 68g of sugar!! Or 18 teaspoons! Which to put it in perspective is more than 7 Kirspy Kreme Doughnuts have in them. And more than a child should have in 4 days.
Quickly followed by a Starbucks carrot cake and a blueberry muffin - all those seemingly innocent numbers that have fruit in the title are just doing nobody any favours. So please beware, the food industry is out there to suck you in, not to make you healthy!
Please read the labels. It's a minefield out there, and when you think you're having the healthy carrot cake or lemony option, you're often actually just being fed an even more humongous dose of the white stuff.
